Most women come in telling me where it hurts. The shoulders. The low back. That spot between the shoulder blades that never fully releases no matter what they try. They've had massages. They've done the stretches. They've taken the ibuprofen. Yet, it keeps coming back. What they don't know is that it keeps coming back because it's not just tension. It's information.
The back body holds what we don't say, what we haven't asked for, what we're carrying for everyone else, and what we've swallowed instead of expressed. Every area has a pattern. And once you know the pattern, what your body has been doing starts to make a different kind of sense.
The Body Keeps Score, And So Do Sha Marks
I was cupping a client recently when I noticed something. Her sha marks, the redness that surfaces when cupping draws stagnation to the skin, they weren't scattered. They were actually very specific. Her right side, along the QL, that deep low back muscle, and her left shoulder showed the darkest, deepest stagnation. These weren’t specific areas of pain, she just said her back and shoulders hurt all the time. These were two areas that told me the full story.
In the energetic map of the body, the right side carries masculine energy: our relationship to structure, to the men in our lives, to busyness, overdoing, and the pressure to achieve. The left side carries feminine energy: our relationship to nurturing, to family, to the things we want to do or be that get buried under our responsibilities to others.
Her right-side QL was holding the weight of too much doing and not enough receiving. The things she hadn't asked for. The needs she'd set aside so many times they'd stopped feeling like needs at all. Her left shoulder was holding her family. Not with resentment , she loves them, but with the accumulated weight of always being the one who shows up, who holds it, who makes sure everyone else is okay first.
When I named what I was seeing in her tissue, she went quiet. Then she said: you're exactly right. She had no idea her body had been keeping that record. She just thought her back hurt.
What the Back Body Is Actually Holding
The back body is the body's unconscious archive. It holds what we haven't processed, what we're not ready to face, what we've absorbed from others and never discharged. Here is what I see most often under my hands, mapped to where I find it:
The Low Back and QL; Unmet Needs and Frustration
The Quadratus Lumborum or, QL is where I find the women who are doing everything for everyone and quietly starving for something they can't name. This is the area of unmet needs, of things she wants to do or be that haven't had any room. When the stagnation is on the right side, I start asking , gently, and only when she's ready, about the masculine forces in her life. The structures that feel immovable. The relationships where she's never quite had permission to need things.
The Mid-Back and Rhomboids; Sadness, Support, and Swallowed Anger
The rhomboids sit between the shoulder blades, and they are some of the most emotionally loaded tissue I work with. This is where sadness lives when it has nowhere to go. Anger that was never safe to express. The grief of not being supported , by parents, by partners, by the people who were supposed to show up.
One of my clients came in for shoulder pain that had been with her for years. We worked through that tissue slowly, session by session, and as the layers released, something else emerged. The rhomboids weren't the root. They were the shield, the guard at the gate. Underneath them, in the solar plexus , the area of guilt, shame, frustration, and disappointment, was her younger self. The one who learned early that certain feelings weren't safe, that certain needs made her too much, that the way to survive was to hold it all in and get on with things. Her body had been organizing itself around that original wound for decades.
This is the work I do. Not fixing the symptom but following it to what it's been protecting.
The Shoulders; Carrying Too Much for Too Long
The shoulders carry weight that was never meant to be permanent. The left shoulder holds the feminine side of that carrying, family, children, the emotional labor of relationships. The right shoulder holds the masculine , work, responsibility, achievement, the weight of holding a structure together.
When both are locked, she's usually carrying everything, for everyone, with no one carrying anything for her.
Why This Keeps Coming Back
A single massage can soften what's there. It can give the nervous system a window of relief, a moment of genuine rest. But if the pattern underneath isn't addressed, the tissue re-arranges back to what it knows. The shoulders climb back up. The QL braces again. The rhomboids return to guard. This isn't a failure of bodywork. It's the body being faithful to what it believes is true.
The work that creates lasting change goes into the story underneath the symptom. It asks not just where does it hurt, but what has been living here, how long has it been waiting, and what would it mean to finally put it down.
What This Kind of Work Actually Looks Like
This is not passive bodywork. You are not on my table to be worked on. You are there to be read, and then to work with what gets revealed. Some women arrive knowing something is ready to move. Others arrive thinking they just need their back sorted out and discover something much older waiting underneath. Both are welcome. Both are exactly where they need to be. The body doesn't lie. It doesn't forget. And in my experience, it is always, always trying to get your attention.
The question is whether you're ready to listen.
